We're delighted to have Prof. Jean-Michel back at The Old Compass this month Apr 19th at 7.30PM for a talk about: 10 centuries of art and history in Cambodia
This conference will deal with the ancient history of Cambodia (5th – 15th century) based on Khmer art and particularly on statuary. More than a simple description of Khmer art and its evolution, our aim will be to show that these artistic masterpieces can contribute to a new reading of the ancient history of the Khmer country.
OUR SPEAKER: Jean-Michel Filippi is currently an invited lecturer in the Royal University of Phnom Penh where he teaches Khmer linguistics. He had previously been a specialist of languages and civilizations of Eastern Europe where he lived till 1995. He is specialized in the description of Khmer language and various minority languages of Cambodian and Southeast Asia and has been in charge of UNESCO programs about minority languages and cultures in Cambodia as well as a description of the various minority languages of the Cardamom Mountains. He published several articles and books about these topics, in French, Khmer and in English. For a few years, he has also been involved in the study of Khmer statuary and is currently preparing a book about it.
